There are no festivities or celebrations at the start of the Islamic calendar. It starts with introspection. A hallowed time full of spiritual significance, historical depth, and life-changing lessons begins as the first crescent of Muharram emerges in the sky, marking the beginning of the Hijri New Year.
The Islamic New Year starts in the solemn dignity of reflection, in contrast to the Gregorian New Year, which is frequently greeted with enthusiastic applause and lavish parties. One of the four holy months listed in the Qur’an, Muharram, is a period of heightened awe. Its first day is an invitation, not merely a date. An invitation to take a moment to think, to set the tone for the months to come.
Why Muharram Is Sacred
Muharram is one of the four holy months mentioned by Allah in Surah At-Tawbah (9:36). It was called “the month of Allah” by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, a unique distinction that no other month has received. Muharram is elevated as a period of tranquility, piety, and reflection by this appellation.

It is strongly advised to fast during this month, particularly on Ashura, the tenth day, which is commemorated by the historical events surrounding Prophet Musa (AS) and, later, the terrible martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA) at Karbala. However, the benefits start early. It is virtuous to fast even in the first few days, and it is highly recommended to increase one’s good deeds during the month.
However, Muharram is about more than just individual objectives. It’s also about honoring a shared history. Karbala, a pivotal event in Islamic history that epitomizes justice, sacrifice, and unwavering faith, will be remembered throughout the month. The heart is better prepared for the upcoming difficult days when the month begins with a sense of moral clarity and spiritual power.
In conclusion
On the first day of Muharram, silence is more important than noise. It calls on the soul to pay attention to history, the Qur’an, and one’s conscience. We are reminded as we begin this holy month and a new Islamic year that every new beginning offers the opportunity to deepen our relationship with Allah, develop our moral fiber, and show respect for our predecessors by our deeds.
I hope that this Muharram brings about deep spiritual awakening, healing, and rejuvenation. And may we continue to uphold the principles of truth, endurance, and purpose throughout the upcoming year, just like the righteous of the past did.
